Dihaploid Induction through Tetraploid ¡¿ Diploid Cross in Potatoes

Abstract
Dihaploid (2n=2x=24) inducing ability through crossing tetraploid (2n=4x=48) potatoes (Solanum tuberosum) with diploid (2n=2x=24) pollinators (S. phureja) was investigated. Dihaploid-inducing ability was largely influenced by the genotypes of their parents. Dihaploid frequency per 100 berries by female parents ranged from 0.0 to 64.8, and that by male parents did from 5.5 to 66.2. More dihaploids were obtained by crossing between parents with higher dihaploid-inducing ability. Consequently, the selection of superior female and male parents is required to maximize the dihaploid-inducing ability through the 4x¡¿2x cross in potatoes.
